Today’s Scripture: John 1:29-31

Begin with Prayer: Lord, thank you for how faithful you are, and that your word never returns to you void. Show me what you want me to see in your word today. In Jesus name, Amen.

Read the passage slowly, prayerfully.

Read it again, and if you wish, a third time.

Is there a truth that’s jumping out at you? Write it down.

My Example: John spoke by the Spirit when he talked of Jesus. He even said He himself did not know Him, but he baptized so that Jesus would be revealed.

How can we apply that truth to life?

My Example: Pray and stay close to the Lord, be led by His Spirit. That way my life will reveal Jesus to those who don’t know Him.

Follow up with Prayer:

Lord I pray in Jesus name, that you would help me to stay close to you. That my life would be led by the Spirit of God, and would reveal Jesus to many. Lord, take my life and make it yours. Let me be a picture of you . Amen.

My Example: When asked why he was baptizing, John did not directly answer the pharisees, but only pointed to Jesus.

How can we apply that truth to life?

My Example: When people question why I do what I do when I’m following Jesus, my answer should be to point them to him, and not to myself.

Follow up with Prayer:

Thank you Father, that you are the one I am answerable to. Lord you have put people in authority over me, but to those who’s authority I am not under, who would question the way I follow you, Lord help me to point them to you, just as John did. Amen.

Today’s Scripture: John 1:19-23

Begin with Prayer: Lord, thank you for how faithful you are, and that your word never returns to you void. Show me what you want me to see in your word today. In Jesus name, Amen.

Read the passage slowly, prayerfully.

Read it again, and if you wish, a third time.

Is there a truth that’s jumping out at you? Write it down.

My Example: John responded to question of  who he was with the word.

How can we apply that truth to life?

My Example: When I see a scripture that says something about me, I can speak that scripture over myself, and even memorize that scripture.

Follow up with Prayer:

Thank the Lord that you are in Christ. Thank Him for making you unique, with gifts and talents He gave especially for you. Thank Him that He has plans for you, plans that are good (Jer 29:11). If you’re not sure what His plans for you are yet, ask Him to reveal them to you.  Know that these plans aren’t given all at once, but over a whole lifetime. He has the blueprints to your life.

Today’s Scripture: John 1:14-18

Begin with Prayer: Lord, thank you for how faithful you are, and that your word never returns to you void. Show me what you want me to see in your word today. In Jesus name, Amen.

Read the passage slowly, prayerfully.

Read it again, and if you wish, a third time.

Is there a truth that’s jumping out at you? Write it down.

My Example: Grace and truth can be found in Jesus.

How can we apply that truth to life?

My Example: When I make a mistake, when I sin, I can run to my heavenly Father, not from Him. It is His grace, a gift from Him, that makes me right with Him. I can come to Him when I sin, confess, ask forgiveness, and receive His help.

Follow up with Prayer:

Thank the Lord for His grace towards you, that He doesn’t require you to be perfect to come to Him. Thank Him that it is you who can come to Him through Jesus,  just as you are, and it is He that does the work in you.

Today’s Scripture: John 1:10-13

Begin with prayer: Lord Jesus, Show me what you want to see in your word today. In Jesus name, Amen.

Read the passage slowly, prayerfully.

Read it again a second time, and if you wish, a third.

Is there a truth that is jumping out at you? Write it down.

My example:  I am born of God. I am his child, and he accepts me as his own.

How can we apply that truth to life?

My Example:  Know that Jesus understands rejection. It is is He who has called me His own, it’s not up to anyone else. Live for Him, not for man.

Follow up with Prayer:

It’s Ok to pour out your heart to God. You can do this on paper or out loud. He already knows what’s there, and has accepted you as His child. Let it out. Let Him hear your feelings.. and thank Him that He has made you his Child.

Speak it out: Sometimes, when you see a great truth about who you are, it’s good to speak that out, aloud to yourself.

My Example: I am a child of God. He accepts me as His own.

Today’s Verse: John 1:6-9

Begin With Prayer: Father in Heaven, I praise you for you are Holy and wonderful. Come into this devotion time I pray, and let me learn of you. I plead the blood of Jesus over my heart and mind, and ask that you would give me understanding. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Read the Verse slowly, prayerfully.

Read it again, and if you wish, a third time.

Is there a truth that is jumping out at you? Write it down.

My Example: It is Jesus who works in people’s hearts. I can be a light, pointing them to Jesus, but He alone is the true light and only He can change hearts.

How can you apply this to your life?

My Example: I am speaking to a class very soon, and have been preparing the message. Yes, I need to prepare and plan what I will say, but ultimately it is the Holy Spirit who will do the work. I can give that burden over to God and trust Him with the whole thing!

Follow up with prayer.

Talk to God about what you just read. Give things over to Him that have been on your heart.

Let’s Begin

The first thing any Christian hears when they accept Jesus is, “Read your Bible.”

But to a new Christian, or a Christian who hasn’t formed the habit of being in the word, this can be overwhelming. Some questions that can come to mind are where do I start? Am I reading in the right place? Why can’t I understand what I just read?

There are so many plans available to read through the Bible in a year or even three years. And those plans can be great. I once had a teacher in Bible College though, who said he knew many Christians who read through the Bible every year, but never put it into practice, so they remained Baby Christians. This teacher’s emphasis was on application, reading the Bible and applying what you’ve learned to your life (See James 1:22-25).

Don’t get me wrong. I am a fan of reading the Bible to feed your spirit, especially when someone is hungry for the word. Go for it. Read all you want… soak it in… It is a wellspring of life.

But I am going to start this Blog by teaching you to take the Bible in piece by piece, line by line, and to ask the Lord to help us put His word into practice in our daily lives. We will prayerfully read a small passage over a few times, soaking it in and thinking about it. I will share some resources I’ve learned about along the way and my prayer is that you, the reader, will take what works for you, leave what doesn’t, and grow in Christ.

So let’s start with prayer.

Lord Jesus, we come to you today and humbly ask that by your Holy Spirit you would speak to us through your word. Show us how we can put your word into practice in our daily lives.

John 1:1-5 (I will always link the passage to Biblegateway.com or another online Bible site)

Begin to read the passage over slowly, prayerfully.

Read it a second time, and if you wish a third.

Is there a truth that is jumping out at you through this passage? Write it down.

Just for example’s sake I will share what jumped out at me:

All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being (John 1:3 Amp).

That person who I’d rather not be around… that person came into existence through Him.

How can we apply this truth to our life?

Prayer: Lord how can I put this into practice?

Again for an example I’ll share how I can put that truth into practice.

I can apply this truth in my life by praying for that person. I can ask the Lord to bless them, reveal Himself to them and provide for their needs. I can ask the Lord to help me love this person more and to lead and direct me on how to go about it.

Follow up with Prayer.

Begin with praise (Psalm 100:4).

Ask the Lord to help you put these things into practice. Ask Him to direct your steps, and thank Him for speaking to you through His word.

God Bless you as you apply the word to life!
