The first thing any Christian hears when they accept Jesus is, “Read your Bible.”
But to a new Christian, or a Christian who hasn’t formed the habit of being in the word, this can be overwhelming. Some questions that can come to mind are where do I start? Am I reading in the right place? Why can’t I understand what I just read?
There are so many plans available to read through the Bible in a year or even three years. And those plans can be great. I once had a teacher in Bible College though, who said he knew many Christians who read through the Bible every year, but never put it into practice, so they remained Baby Christians. This teacher’s emphasis was on application, reading the Bible and applying what you’ve learned to your life (See James 1:22-25).
Don’t get me wrong. I am a fan of reading the Bible to feed your spirit, especially when someone is hungry for the word. Go for it. Read all you want… soak it in… It is a wellspring of life.
But I am going to start this Blog by teaching you to take the Bible in piece by piece, line by line, and to ask the Lord to help us put His word into practice in our daily lives. We will prayerfully read a small passage over a few times, soaking it in and thinking about it. I will share some resources I’ve learned about along the way and my prayer is that you, the reader, will take what works for you, leave what doesn’t, and grow in Christ.
So let’s start with prayer.
Lord Jesus, we come to you today and humbly ask that by your Holy Spirit you would speak to us through your word. Show us how we can put your word into practice in our daily lives.
John 1:1-5 (I will always link the passage to Biblegateway.com or another online Bible site)
Begin to read the passage over slowly, prayerfully.
Read it a second time, and if you wish a third.
Is there a truth that is jumping out at you through this passage? Write it down.
Just for example’s sake I will share what jumped out at me:
All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being (John 1:3 Amp).
That person who I’d rather not be around… that person came into existence through Him.
How can we apply this truth to our life?
Prayer: Lord how can I put this into practice?
Again for an example I’ll share how I can put that truth into practice.
I can apply this truth in my life by praying for that person. I can ask the Lord to bless them, reveal Himself to them and provide for their needs. I can ask the Lord to help me love this person more and to lead and direct me on how to go about it.
Follow up with Prayer.
Begin with praise (Psalm 100:4).
Ask the Lord to help you put these things into practice. Ask Him to direct your steps, and thank Him for speaking to you through His word.
God Bless you as you apply the word to life!
